Book Review: Barney Miller and the Files of the Ol’ One-Two

Having been a fan of the Barney Miller TV series back during its first run, I’ve continued to enjoy reruns and home video releases. Over the years, I have often heard from police that it was one of the more accurate shows about law enforcement, even thought it was a comedy. The ensemble cast worked well together, and also as individuals, and the episodic structure was never boring or tangential.

BearManor Media has now released a book that thoroughly covers the entire series, discussing each episode and giving background information, while also providing insights about the actors, writers, and directors involved with the show. It is one of the most informative and insightful books on media studies and a real contribution to television history.

Author Otto W. Bruno deeply researched every aspect of the series from its conception, to its execution and, ultimately, its legacy. Speaking to nearly all of the living actors and filmmakers involved with its production, Bruno helps us to further understand and better appreciate just why this show is not only accurate but also timeless.

Actors Hal Linden (who had iconic the title role) and Max Gail (the consistently delightful Wojo) each contribute Forewords, and as the text continues their memories add greater interest and authenticity. The author then adds a welcome personal touch, indicating his own interest and motivation. He thereafter discusses the initial season, provides detailed info on creator Danny Arnold, and gives biographies for each of the principal actors. Following that, the book covers each episode and, after nearly 600 pages, anything anyone might want to know about Barney Miller has been learned.

This is exactly the sort of book that is necessary for media scholarship. It takes a significant television series and explores its creativity, its success, its cultural impact, and its continuing legacy with complete information, interesting details, and charming trivia. Add to that the insights of many who worked on the series, and Mr. Bruno’s study is not only the first book on Barney Miller, but is also definitive.

This book is highly recommended for libraries, research centers, and anyone interested in television history. And, for fans of the series, this book is absolutely indispensable.
