In a very interesting idea for a book length study, veteran author Karen A. Romanko covers how historical women are portrayed on television. Her book description offers such examples as Queen Victoria on Bewitched and Amelia Earhart on Star Trek: Voyager. Ms. Earhart also graces the book’s cover alongside actress Susan Clark who portrayed her in a 1976 TV movie.
The structure of the book is brilliant, with 120 women listed alphabetically with brief bio info, and all of the different ways they were portrayed in television. It makes the book a handy and interesting reference for television historians and fans.
Along with historical figures, the author includes such film people as Carole Lombard, Marilyn Monroe, and Hedy Lamarr (whose accomplishments were many).
The book is very expansive and thorough with a great variety of many subjects, and interesting info as to the different actresses who portrayed them, each having a different approach which allows us to see a lot of comparison/contrast.
Historical Women on Television fills a need in media history studies. It examines an aspect of television, and of history, that provides a great deal of insight in an area that has been give far too little attention.
This book is most highly recommended for libraries, research centers, schools, historians, and fans of TV.
